Welcome to Week 2!
This Sunday’s skill focus is figurative language.
Figurative language is one of my very FAVORITE concepts to teach, but my sixth graders always need LOTS of exposure to the different types of figurative language before they really grasp the concept. Some of these freebies are oldies but goodies, but be sure to scroll down to find out what the exclusive VICTORY FREEBIES (yes, PLURAL today!) will be when the Saints beat the Buccaneers in their first home game today at noon!
This first freebie is probably my most POPULAR freebie to date, so just in case you’ve been living under a rock – here she is! This figurative language story is a great way to help your students learn to find figurative language in the wild, in it’s natural setting, instead of in isolation!
This next freebie is by The Brown Bag Teacher, and it’s the perfect figurative language activity to add to your interactive notebooks! Download Figurative Language Puzzles from her TpT store!
This next freebie is a SUPER AWESOME PowerPoint review. Each slide includes an article that contains a piece of figurative language. Students have to pick out the figurative language. PLUS, it’s interactive, so clicking on the right or wrong answer will bring you to a different page. Perfect for your interactive whiteboard if you’ve got one! Download from Jacob Lightbody’s TpT store.
If you’re hoping to find something a little more challenging for your 7th, 8th, or 9th graders, here’s your ticket. It’s a set of worksheets by Stacey Lloyd!
And it’s just a TINY bit early for this next freebie, but you’ll want to download it now and send it to the copy room right away so that you’ll have it ready when you want to have a little fun in October! The amazing Margaret Whisnant has this free Halloween Pun packet that your kids are SURE to love. I don’t officially teach puns and test on them, but what a great way to have fun with language!
And finally, here’s your …
These products will be free for ONE HOUR ONLY following a Saints win this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers! Be sure to come back here and look for those links, as you can ONLY get these items during the hour they are free. Please read the rules here if you haven’t already.
First, I made a new set of figurative language posters. The old set still sells well so I left that but I really wanted to make some that were new and fresh. And I rushed to post them last night, so I’m really NOT happy with this cover, but I’ll have to redo that later.. sometime AFTER the game! Speaking of after the game.. this will be a flash freebie after the Saints win, so be sure to come back by this afternoon!
And second, this Figurative Language worksheet set will also be free for an hour in my store following a Saints win!
Ah, another cover that I need to update!
Hope to see you back this afternoon. Happy Sunday! 🙂
Erin,
Are you planning to update the other figurative language products you have to match the new design? I love the new posters! Hoping the Saints win!! And thank you for the freebies!!

Figurative language is one of my MOST favorite skills to teach as well. Are you familiar with "Apple Island, or the Truth about Teachers" by Doug Evans… perfect book to read aloud as a mentor text for figurative language. It might be a tad young for your sixth graders as the protagonist is a fourth grader. I just change his age in the book and mine have no clue;)
So hoping for a Saints win this week… spotted those posters last night after you posted them and almost bought them right then and there. Glad I waited;)
Happy Saints Win Day,
Angela
I think I'd happily skip all the freebies to get the Saints back on the winning track. =(
Love your freebies. Hope the Saints win. Just a question. When are you going to post lessons etc to go with your vocabulary book?
Why have I downloaded an ESPN app just for quarter by quarter updates! Serious teacher over here..woop woop! LOL…not even a football fan! BETTER LUCK NEXT WEEK!
Thanks, Erin! Love teaching figurative language, too. It's fun to see the other TPT sites-I've found some great new resources!
Thanks for the shout-out Erin! 🙂
