In every classroom, there are some students who thrive on competition. They will push that extra mile and give that extra effort just to be on top. But it’s hard to brag about yourself all the time and students may not always know where they really rank. So show them!
I do this for Accelerated Reader, but you could certainly do it for just about anything. You could even do it for highest grade average, making the biggest improvements, writing the best sentences, etc. It could be based off of teacher judgement or in this case actual data.
As teachers, we are often discouraged from “ranking” our kids or making things a competition. But this isn’t a whole-class competition. You aren’t requiring students to participate. Average students or students who struggle will not be featured or highlighted. They remain anonymous! It isn’t like you are posting a ranking of the whole class. I have found this to be a HUGE motivator. It makes those students who are sometimes content putting forth moderate effort and doing well to push that extra mile and really show what they can do!
