Oh, I do the SAME thing! The Landlady is also a popular favorite! π Erin
I love Oh the places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss and Math Curse by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith. I use Math Curse to introduce fractions and the kids love it. It takes a bit of the stress and anxiety away that many of my students feel with fractions.
I love teaching Seventh Grade by Gary Soto at the start of the school year. It's a great little story about the trials and tribulations of Middle School and a great introduction to well, Seventh Grade. I use this as a reading assessment to kind of gauge where my students are. We do a couple of short little activities with the story and of course answer reading comprehension questions.

Grandfather Tang's Story
I use so many picture books to introduce topics from every subject. This year I found One Cool Friend by Tony Buzzeo as a way to introduce quotation marks. Conversation is written in speech bubbles!
