My 7th graders are finally getting into the nitty gritty of The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963. This week, before these events occur in the novel, my students are going to complete this Birmingham Church Bombing Research Activity.
Click the images above to download this research activity through Google Docs. Students need to access a website to find the answers to those questions. As they go, it guides them to discover several important facts that will ready them to read about this event in the novel. The first four questions (there are 24 total) instruct students to use World Book Online. If your school doesn’t have a subscription, you can skip those 4 or challenge your students to find the answers elsewhere. What’s my favorite part of this activity? The fact that it’s multiple choice and easy to grade. Multiple choice is so much harder to make but so much easier to grade!
Also this week I will be starting some activities from my new packet for Veterans Day: Differentiated Activities for Close Reading.
I’ll be doing Activity 1 with my 6th graders. They’ll have to read a nonfiction article about the history of Veterans Day and complete a close reading activity. Then, they’ll make a timeline. This is my favorite activity because there are THREE versions of this article included! The first version is the original and the most challenging. The second version is written in simpler language and has less extra information that isn’t required. Finally, there is a third version for struggling students or English language learners that has the information needed in bold print. I absolutely LOVE that all students are reading the same information, can have the same discussion, and complete the same activity with three different versions of the same text. I’m super excited about this (can you tell?) and I hope to do more activities like this in the future!
