Well, I did it. I used THE WHEEL!
I placed this prize wheel on my front board ledge for an entire day and REFUSED to discuss it with the kids. I wrote “DO NOT TOUCH THIS” above it and drew an arrow to the wheel. It drove the kids CRAZY! They were DYING to spin the wheel. I don’t think they even CARED what the prize was – or if there even WAS a prize – they just wanted to touch the thing! It’s a nice wooden sturdy wheel and it makes a satisfying “tick tick tick” when you spin it. How tempting!
The next day, during my quarterly AR Popcorn Party, my students were practically salivating from the mouth over the wheel. They were dying to know what they had to do to get to spin it. If I had said “To spin the wheel, you must cut off one finger,” I’d have had them lined up. They were so pumped! Then I announced that students who met their 4th 9 weeks AR goal got to spin the wheel. Cheers and wails at the same time. What did they win? BONUS points for the final. Spin an 8, get 8 bonus points on the final. Spin a 1, get 1 bonus point. They were SO THRILLED to get extra points on the final, you’d have thought I was giving out gift cards to the mall.
I will DEFINITELY not be leaving this in the closet for another year! I paid $20 for it at Oriental Trading and it is MORE than worth the money.
